Part of the answer to the latter question from last week lies in the bible. Genesis 6 in the King James Version states “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” There are in fact many verses in the bible discussing giants. This means that there are a lot of religious people who look and hope for evidence of giants because it provides evidence for their faith and seems to argue against the scientific view of the world. In fact, this is supposedly the reason why there aren’t any remains of these giants left for us to see. Some people believe that the reason why there aren’t any official records is because scientists have been hiding/destroying/repressing the evidence because it would contradict their theory of evolution. Even if they aren’t actively getting rid of evidence, they obviously must be ignoring or misconstruing facts to keep their theory intact: (source)“Evolutionists are not willing to accept that there existed in the past giant versions of modern man because there is no evolutionary explanation for their existence, just as there is no real attempt to explain giant versions of modern day animals. “ Now, first of all, this isn’t frankly true and stems from a misunderstanding of evolution. Evolutionary theory, at its most basic level, simply states that organisms change over time through genetic modification. Essentially, creatures and plants may experience random mutations throughout their lives which they pass down to their children, eventually creating new and varied species. If you think about it this way, it makes perfect sense that giants could have developed through some kind of mutation. Thus, there would be no reason for scientists to hide evidence against giants as it doesn’t really contradict modern evolutionary theory. Secondly, if scientists were so consumed with suppressing evidence of strange creatures, why weren’t the homo floresiensis remains suppressed? For those of you who don’t remember, that was the name of the bones that were found on Flores Island back in 2004 that seem to belong to a people who were about three feet tall.
The homo floresiensis case also brings up an interesting point. The scientists who were involved in that dig made one of the most profound discoveries of their careers. They became well known and important and their papers on this subject were easily published. Combine that with the worldwide news attention they received and why wouldn’t a scientist with real proof of giants come forward? In fact there have been fossils that have been found that seem to represent larger hominids than traditional homo erectus, namely some of the paranthropus robustus (sometimes pouplarly known as meganthropus) finds. The problem, as with all older fossils, is that it gets real hard to estimate size when all you have is jaw bone and part of the skull. Even more problematic, these species existed somewhere between 1.2 and 2 MILLION years ago. Well outside of the reach of written history and hardly evidence of a race of giants living along with modern man. Personally, I don’t have a problem with reconciling my beliefs in a scientific world. What I dislike, though, is when people use any evidence they can find to try to prove that they’re right while others are wrong. Things like how Stonehenge or the Pyramids must have been made by aliens because they were so big and complex. (Prehistoric man was perfectly capable of stacking stones atop other stones and had a working knowledge of the lever and star calendars.)

The scary sky really makes this shot.

One of these pieces of shoddy evidence that I came across repeatedly is that giants show up all the time in stories throughout the world and thus must have existed. This makes me upset for a couple of reasons, the biggest being that it seems to suggest that there is no possible way that humans could have imagined a bigger version of themselves. Secondly, there are several stories that show up in the myths and legends of peoples across the globe. For example, the story of a doll/statue that became human (Pygmalion, Pinocchio, Hine Ahu One, Sennentuntschi, Black Aggie, etc.). Should we believe that any story that shows up throughout various cultures has roots in fact? And thirdly, take a look at the three skulls below. What do they look like to you?

Some big and nasty guy with one eye, right? What about if you came across one of these?

The skulls above are that of a dwarf elephant and can be found on islands throughout the Mediterranean Sea as well as elsewhere. They’re thought to be the source of the Cyclops legend, just as large dinosaur bones (like the one above) are thought to be the sources of dragon and giant legends throughout the world. So even if you did believe that humans couldn’t possibly come up with the idea of giants on their own, there were things present in the world already to help them out. Monday, are giants kaput then? Check back here for the conclusion!
